This pendant represents a classic example of Victorian-era Roman Revival cameo artistry.

During the mid-19th century, Italian master carvers-particularly in regions such as Torre del Greco-produced finely detailed shell cameos inspired by Greco-Roman portraiture. These cameos were often collected, worn as brooches, or kept as personal keepsakes.

As fashion evolved toward the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many earlier cameos were re-mounted into gold pendants, allowing them to be worn in a more contemporary way. The 21k gold frame surrounding this cameo reflects that later period, while preserving the integrity of the original carving.

The male profile depicted—less common than female or mythological subjects—adds rarity and character to the piece. The depth of carving, organic asymmetry, and subtle surface wear all indicate authentic hand craftsmanship, rather than later reproductions.
